The University of Macau (UM) announced in a statement on Friday that its Chinese Medicine Testing Centre will start its trial operation next month, providing Chinese medicine testing services for manufacturers and organisations in Macau.

The statement quoted UM Rector Yonghua Song (aka Song Yonghua) as saying in a speech that the setting-up of the Macao Centre for Testing of Chinese Medicine (MCTCM) has been completed in line with national and international standards, adding that the centre will strive to obtain more accreditations from the China National Accreditation Service for Conformity Assessment (CNAS) through its trial run.

According to the statement, the centre, formally established in 2022, received its first accreditation from CNAS with ISO/IEC 17025:2017 certification and achieved satisfactory results in a number of proficiency testing projects in May last year.

By leveraging the academic influence and research foundation of the State Key Laboratory of Quality Research in Chinese Medicine at UM, the centre is dedicated to the testing of Chinese medicine in Macau and providing technical support to the local government’s Pharmaceutical Supervision and Administration Bureau (ISAF), the statement noted.

The UM statement said that following the completion of the Medical and Pharmaceutical Testing Building on the UM campus in November last year, the centre optimised its quality management system, and completed the installation, commissioning, and calibration of over 200 pieces of equipment.

“As one of the professional Chinese medicine testing organisations in Macau, the centre not only provides technical support to the Pharmaceutical Supervision and Administration Bureau, but also aims to develop testing and achieve certification here, assisting the industrialisation and international development of the city’s Chinese medicines, while also strengthening the development of special projects for Chinese medicine testing,” Li Shaoping, the centre’s director and distinguished professor, said in the statement.
