The Public Security Police (PSP) arrested a local man in his seventies for sexually assaulting a Filipina domestic helper in the street, PSP spokesman Cheong Heon Fan said during a regular press conference yesterday.

The suspect surnamed Leong told the police that he’s jobless. He was involved in a case of sexual harassment in 2013 and causing bodily harm in 2018. The victim is in her thirties.

According to Cheong, when a resident was riding his motorcycle in Rua do Almirante Sérgio at 3:40 a.m. on Friday, he heard a woman screaming for help, which immediately caught his attention. He then witnessed Leong pushing her down onto the pavement. The resident intervened, attempting to stop Leong, and promptly called the police for assistance.

Police officers who arrived at the scene found Leong reeking of alcohol, while the victim sustained injuries to her head, legs and arms.

The victim told the police that earlier that morning, while walking along the street, Leong, who was sitting on the pavement and drinking alone, approached her and invited her to join him. After declining his invitation, she was suddenly grabbed and forcefully pushed down by Leong. While the victim struggled to escape and screamed for help, Leong touched her chest and private parts.

The victim was subsequently taken to hospital for outpatient treatment and has since been discharged.

Under questioning, Leong denied the accusations, claiming that the victim has harmed herself and that he had merely tried to stop her.

Leong has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing charges of sexual assault, according to Cheong.
