MTel Chairman and CEO Michael Choi Tak Meng told the media yesterday that his company has applied to the government so that it could provide fibre broadband to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), teaching staff and university students, at an “ultra-preferential price”.
Details of the plan will be announced in due course, he added.
According to Choi, the number of the telecom operator’s customers stands at about 8,000 to 9,000, which was about the same as in the past, accounting for five to six percent of Macau’s telecom market.
Speaking to the media on the sidelines of the company’s banquet to celebrate Spring Festival at L’Arc Hotel in Nape, Choi said: “Taking the 150Mbps fibre broadband as an example, some telecom operators charge between 130 patacas and 150 patacas for the same bandwidth. However, my company will offer a concessionary price of 75 patacas for the same bandwidth, which will be maintained for at least two years, and adjusted in the light of the economic environment thereafter.”
Along with the start of Hengqin’s new “first-tier, second-tier” customs arrangements starting on Friday, Choi expressed the wish that the relevant authorities will allow local telecom operators to provide residents in the Guangdong-Macau In-depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin with dedicated services in the near future, adding that MTel was willing to work closely with the mainland’s telecom operators, but the specific operation and timetable were still awaiting clear guidance from the two governments.
Delivering a speech during yesterday’s event, Choi vowed to promote the development of innovative technology and artificial intelligence (AI) computing power in Macau’s telecom industry with the company’s cloud-based supercomputing services.
