The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) said in a statement yesterday that second-year student Du Wenfeng won first prize in the College Category of the 3rd Macao-Wide English Essay Competition (MEEC), while students Alidoro Chenda, Hui Cho Jun, Lou Pui Lam, and Jaden Ravindran garnered honourable mentions.
Now in its third edition, the annual contest was this year themed “Nature and Me”, and was again based on the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It is annually hosted by the Macao Professional Speaking Association (MSPA) and comprises categories in Upper Primary, Middle School, High School, and College.
The statement noted that the theme encouraged writers to “explore the profound connection between humanity and the natural world”. The winning essays from the private Catholic university demonstrated a “deep understanding of the topic, displaying exceptional language proficiency”, according to the statement.
The contest’s award ceremony is slated to be held at the Macao Science Centre (MSC) on March 16, with winning essays to be compiled and published in a book.
