A local woman has fallen victim to a phishing scam via a fraudulent text message purportedly sent by a telecommunications company, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Ho Chan Nam said in a press conference yesterday.
According to Ho, the victim told the police on Saturday that she had received a text message on the previous day claiming that her reward points from a local telecommunications company were about to expire and urged her to redeem them for gifts.
The phishing text contained a link prompting the victim to enter personal information, including her credit card details. The victim provided the requested information as instructed in the message.
The victim later discovered an unauthorised transaction on her credit card, amounting to a loss of HK$30,000.
