The public Macao Polytechnic University (MPU) said in a statement yesterday that linguistics professor Adriana Pagano from the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG) in Brazil recently delivered five lectures on “Corpus and Translation” and “Cognitive Approach to Translation Studies”.
Invited by MPU’s Faculty of Languages and Translation (FLT), the statement noted that Prof. Pagano is the chief researcher at the LETRA Translation Laboratory at UFMG and is recognised for her expertise in translation studies, particularly in machine translation and natural language processing. Her lecture series, which was held over five days, was held online and in-person.
Prof. Pagano has overseen a raft of research projects supported by entities such as the Brazilian National Commission for Science and Technology Development and the EU Commission, according to the statement, and has a publication record of over 100 academic papers and monographs.
A corpus is a collection of writings in form of an electronic database used for linguistic analyses, according to Wiktionary.
During the lecture, she presented theories and concepts in corpus and cognitive translation studies, with participants receiving theoretical insights and hands-on experience with various research tools, the statement said, exploring usage methods and potential applications.
FLT Portuguese Doctoral Programme Coordinator Joaquim Carvalho “affirmed his commitment to fostering academic collaboration by inviting esteemed international scholars for exchanges”, the statement said, with the initiative aiming to establish a robust academic exchange platform for FLT’s faculty and students.
