Six vehicles crashed in Avenida dos Jogos da Ásia Oriental in Taipa yesterday afternoon, which involved a tourist coach, a motorcycle and four cars, slightly injuring the motorbike rider and a passenger on the tourist coach, the authorities said.

The police said that they have provisionally concluded that the crash was due to the tourist coach driver’s failure to brake in time.

Avenida dos Jogos da Ásia Oriental along the western Taipa waterfront runs between Sai Van Bridge’s entrance/exit and the Galaxy Macau integrated resort in west Cotai.

According to statements by the Fire Services Bureau (CB) and the Public Security Police (PSP), the accident occurred shortly before 4 p.m. yesterday when the six vehicles were travelling in the direction of west Cotai.

According to the CB statement, the motorbike rider, a 23-year-old local man, sustained abrasions to his nose, while a passenger on the tourist coach, a 66-year-old female mainlander, sustained contusions to her knees.

The motorbike rider was taken to the public Conde de São Januário Hospital Centre, while the tourist coach passenger was taken to the private Kiang Wu Hospital Taipa Clinic, the CB statement said.

The clinic is Kiang Wu Hospital’s branch in Taipa located on the edge of the Taipa Village area opposite Galaxy Macau. The clinic provides emergency and outpatient services.

The PSP statement said that all motorists passed a breathalyser test.

The police said that the preliminary findings of their investigation show that the tourist coach rammed into the back of a car after its driver failed to brake in time, which then caused a knock-on effect in which that car rear-ended another car, which cannoned into the car in front and that car slammed into the car in front of that, finally resulting in a pile-up of four cars in total, plus the coach.

At that very moment, the PSP statement said, the motorcycle hit the back of the tourist coach due to its rider’s failure to “keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front”.
