A 30-year-old man has been arrested for stealing his friend’s chips and losing them all in gambling, Public Security Police (PSP) spokesman Wong Chi Weng said during a regular press conference yesterday.

Wong said the suspect told the police officers he is a mainland businessman, while the victim, who is the suspect’s friend, is a mainland woman.

The police said that the case involved HK$15,000 worth of chips.

Wong said that police officers received a report in December last year from the female victim, who said that she and her male friend had travelled to Macau together and stayed in a hotel in Cotai.

When she woke up, Wong said, she found that six chips placed on the TV cabinet in their room had vanished, and she phoned the suspect immediately, who admitted that he had gambled all the chips away.

Wong said the police then confirmed that the suspect had already left Macau, but he was intercepted last Wednesday when he re-entered Macau via the local airport.

The suspect was transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP) yesterday, facing aggravated theft charges, according to Wong.
