A woman from the mainland has been arrested for scamming a female victim out of HK$800,000, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Cheong Kim Fong said during a regular press conference yesterday.

The 42-year-old suspect surnamed Dai told the police that she’s jobless. The female victim from the mainland has known Dai for many years.

According to Cheong, earlier this month Dai told the victim that she knew a wealthy businessman who needed cash for gambling. She asked the victim if she was interested in lending money to the businessman, promising a high interest rate.

The victim placed complete trust in Dai and handed over HK$470,000. Last week, Dai requested more funds, and the victim provided an additional HK$330,000. However, when Dai asked for more money recently, the victim started to grow suspicious and took Dai with her to the Judiciary Police.

Under questioning, Dai admitted to scamming the victim, claiming that there was no such wealthy businessman and she had gambled away all the money.

Dai has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing a fraud charge, Cheong said.
