Organised by the Faculty of Humanities and Arts at the private Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST), the “Meaning, Intention: Conceptual Art Exhibition” for the Master Course “Special Topics in Culture” of the Fine Arts Programme at MUST was inaugurated last Tuesday at the MUST Art Gallery. The exhibition showcases 34 pieces and sets of work created by 29 master’s degree students.

The curator, Leong Kit Man, assistant professor of the Fine Arts Programme at the Faculty of Humanities and Arts at MUST, and the teacher of the “Special Topics in Culture” course, provided guidance to the students who are participating in the exhibition.

During a talk at the opening ceremony, Leong emphasised the significance of translating conceptual intention into meaningful expressions for both the audience and the artists. She said, “The crucial process of transforming conceptual ideas into visual presentations involves the creation of art forms, using ‘abstract objects’ that resonate with human perception to convey ideas.”

A statement accompanying the exhibition noted that the students were guided to clarify their intentions and break away from habitual artistic styles. They aimed to utilise practical images, symbols, ready-mades, and materials to express their ideas. Leong underlined the approach taken in the classes by pointing out, “We constantly question, analyse, speculate, and dissect, employing the methodology of ‘iconography’ to explore the meanings behind visual artworks.” She further added, “We engage in the process of transforming original textual intentions into visual presentations and conveying meaning, thus providing a methodology for teaching and interpreting conceptual art creation.”

The exhibition, which will end next Monday, is being held at MUST Art Gallery, at R635, 6/F, daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
