A man from the mainland has been arrested for hocking a fake watch in a local pawn shop, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Cheong Kim Fong said during a regular press conference yesterday.
The 30-year-old suspect surnamed Li told the police he’s a salesman.
According to Cheong, last November Li and his accomplice went to a pawnshop in the San Ma Lou area and pawned a luxury watch for HK$1.5 million. Li provided the watch, while his accomplice submitted identification documents for registration.
Cheong noted that the pawn period for the watch had expired in January and the pawnshop staff sent it to Hong Kong for maintenance. Subsequently, professional examination confirmed that the watch was counterfeit, leading the staff to report the case to the police.
Cheong noted that although expert inspections of the watch have not been completed, the counterfeit watch appeared to be technically of a high quality.
Li was arrested on Sunday when he attempted to leave Macau at the airport checkpoint. He refused to cooperate.
Li has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing a fraud charge, Cheong said.
