The government said yesterday that it expects its project to build a covered elevated walkway along Avenida do Nordeste (東北大馬路) in the peninsula’s Areia Preta district to be completed in early 2027.

The 600-metre-long elevated walkway project is now scheduled to get off the ground in the next quarter.

The covered elevated walkway along Avenida do Nordeste will run between Avenida de Venceslau de Morais (慕拉士大馬路) near the Macao Daily News Building and Rua Central da Areia Preta (黑沙環中街) near the Polytec Garden (保利達花園) residential estate and La Baie Du Noble (海名居) residential estate.

The government launched a public tender early last month for the walkway project. Potential bidders were required to submit their quotations by Wednesday.

A total of 12 construction companies have submitted their bids, which were unsealed by Public Works Bureau (DSOP) officials yesterday.

According to a DSOP statement yesterday, 11 of the 12 bids were accepted, while the bureau rejected the remaining one.

Yesterday’s DSOP statement announced that the quotations for the project proposed by the 11 bidders range from 229 million patacas to 258 million patacas.

The tender has set a maximum period of 780 working days for the winning bidder to complete the project.

Yesterday’s statement announced that the construction periods proposed by the 11 bidders are identical, 702 working days.

After the bureau finishes assessing the 11 bids, it will choose and announce the winner, which will then be required to complete the project in 702 working days after the government has commissioned it.

The statement also said that the government is now aiming for the project to start in the next quarter.

According to the DSOP website, the bureau rejected one of the 12 bids because this bidder proposed a construction period longer than the maximum 780 working days set by the tender.

The Avenida do Nordeste elevated walkway will be the second of its kind in the city. Macau’s first covered elevated walkway, i.e., the one along Avenida de Guimarães (基馬拉斯大馬路) in central Taipa, came into use in June 2021.

Construction of covered elevated walkways is one of the government’s transport policies aiming to create a more friendly walking environment.

The statement also said that the Avenida do Nordeste elevated walkway will be at least four metres wide.

12 access points

The statement said that there will be a total of 12 access points along Avenida do Nordeste to the elevated walkway.

According to the DSOP website, the access points will include those outside seven residential estates along Avenida do Nordeste, namely Nam Ou Garden (南澳花園), Hoi Pan Garden (海濱花園), Tong Wa San Chun (東華新邨), Kam Hoi San Garden (金海山花園), Kuong Wa San Chun (廣華新邨), Polytec Garden (保利達花園), and La Baie Du Noble (海名居).

Two of the access points will be located outside the government’s high-rise rental residential building for senior citizens on Plot P.

The government has said that seniors who have been successful in their applications to rent a flat there can expect to move into their flats in the fourth quarter.

Yesterday’s statement also said that the Avenida do Nordeste elevated walkway will also be connected to the podium area of the future social rental housing estate located next to the Macao Daily News Building on Avenida de Venceslau de Morais.

According to the DSOP website, the Avenida de Venceslau de Morais social housing project is now scheduled to be completed in July this year.
