Macau will host five to six events of the 15th National Games in 2025, and more details will be released next month, Sports Bureau (ID) President Pun Weng Kun told reporters on the sidelines of yesterday’s Women’s Sports Festival at the Tap Seac Multi-Sports Pavilion.
Pun did not reveal which events will take place in Macau, but he said he believed the events will be “welcomed by residents and tourists alike”.
The 15th National Games will be jointly hosted by Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau, and will take place in 2025 under two categories – competitions featuring Olympic Games for professionals and mass sports events for non-professionals.
“The events are not only about the Games, but also aim to promote the development of sports tourism and the sport industry in Macau,” Pun said.
Pun said that his bureau plans to launch a test competition in the second quarter of this year at the earliest, so as to review how to host the event and to make, if necessary, improvements. Pun said he estimated that two to three test competitions would be held.
Pun also said that under the coordination of the General Administration of Sport, Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau are discussing the conditions and information-sharing for the co-hosting of the Games, and would decide on which competitions would be hosted by each of them, taking into account the facilities of the venues and the basic level of sport development.
In addition, Pun told reporters that the returfing of the football pitch, after it was damaged by a recent K-Pop gig, at the Macau Olympic Sports Centre Stadium in Taipa has been completed and the stadium is scheduled to reopen next month.
