A 34-year-old local man has been arrested in the city centre for sexually harassing a woman “after drinking a large quantity of alcoholic beverages”, Public Security Police (PSP) spokeswoman Cheong Im Sim said during a regular press conference yesterday.
Cheong noted that the suspect, who told the police that he works as a driver, is surnamed Kou, while the victim, a non-resident worker (NRW), is employed by a shop in the city centre.
According to the victim’s report, she was dragging a bag of rubbish last Tuesday night, when the bag broke and the garbage fell to the ground in an alley in the city centre. A man came forward to assist her, during which, he grabbed both of her hands. The victim told the police that she was afraid of being sexually harassed, so she notified her boss for help, adding that the man then returned to the scene, attempting to harass her again.
The Public Security Police identified Kou as the suspect via the police forces’ citywide CCTV camera system and arrested him at noon the next day in the central district.
Under questioning, according to Cheong, Kou insisted he forgot what he had done, claiming that on the day of the incident, he was drunk after consuming a large quantity of alcoholic beverages during dinner at a restaurant in the Fai Chi Kei neighbourhood.
Kou has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing a sexual harassment charge, Cheong noted.
