The erstwhile Macao Institute for Tourism Studies (IFTM) is now the city’s sixth university, with the public tertiary education institution changing its name to “Macao University of Tourism (UTM)”, which officially took effect yesterday.

UTM, a statement from the university on Sunday noted, is now 澳門旅遊大學 and Universidade de Turismo de Macau in Chinese and Portuguese.

The university’s mission is “to become a leading higher education institution in internationalised tourism and service industry studies that equips students with professional knowledge and technical competence in preparation for taking on leadership responsibilities in the industry, and to become a globally recognised destination for tourism studies”, according to the statement.

Moreover, the statement said that a number of new degree courses will be added: Bachelor of Science in International Business and Innovative Communication programme; a revamped Bachelor of Science in Marketing and Brand Management programme; two Masters programmes in the Events Management field; and Doctor of Business Administration programme, which are all set to be launched in the new academic year (2024/25).

The Silver Jubilee Building and the new Accommodation Building on the Taipa campus are under construction and are slated for completion next year, aiming to provide a new academic building and hospitality training space.

The domain name for its website and email has also been changed to utm.edu.mo, with the old domain to work for a transition period until December 31, 2025.

Meanwhile, the statement also noted that UTM aims to utilise “the vast geographical and developmental strength of Hengqin” in the future.
