The University of Macau (UM) said in a statement yesterday that its Faculty of Arts and Humanities (FAH) has recently held the Fifth UM Language and Culture Day, the faculty’s “signature event” that was attended by over 200 UM students and faculty members.

Themed “Cherish Mother Tongues, Embrace All Cultures”, the event “aims to promote the preservation of mother tongues, and foster students’ critical thinking by showcasing different cultures”, according to the statement.

The statement noted that during the event’s opening ceremony, the students and faculty members presented cultural performances such as instrumental recitals and Beijing Opera, showcasing the cultures of China, Japan, Europe and the US, among others. Activities such as the “Cultural Treasure Hunt”, craft workshops, and demonstrations of traditional cultures from different countries were also held, the statement said.

In his speech, the statement noted that FAH Associate Dean Li Defeng said that organising the event in the era of artificial intelligence (AI) was a better way to showcase the timeless charm of languages and cultures and demonstrated the faculty’s commitment to preserving existing languages against the backdrop of technological advancements.
