A woman from the mainland has been arrested for embezzling HK$550,000 from a gambler, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Ho Chan Nam said at a press conference yesterday.

The 42-year-old suspect, surnamed Gong, told the police that she doesn’t have a formal job.

According to Ho, the mainland male victim got acquainted with Gong in 2020 and used to engage in currency exchanges with her during his regular visits to Macau. On January 19 of this year, the victim contacted Gong to arrange another currency exchange deal. Three days later, the victim entrusted Gong with HK$550,000 he had won, requesting that she convert it into yuan and deposit it into his bank account. Gong told him that the sum was “too big”, delaying the transfer until the next day.

Trusting Gong, the victim returned to the mainland that day. However, he never received the money and upon repeated enquiries, Gong confessed that she embezzled the money and gambled it all away. The victim later reported the case to the police.

Gong was arrested when she re-entered Macau on Friday. She admitted to the crime.

Gong has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing a charge of abuse of trust.
