Two local companies separately reported to the police that their computer systems had been hacked and some documents encrypted for blackmail, a Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesperson said during a regular press conference yesterday.

The spokesperson said the two firms, one of them a travel agency, reported the hacking to the Judiciary Police on Friday and Tuesday respectively. Documents in both companies’ computer systems had been encrypted and could not be opened.

According to the spokesperson, the hacker or hackers demanded that the companies pay three and five bitcoins respectively, equivalent to HK$20,000 and HK$35,000, so that their documents would be decrypted.
