The police said yesterday that they expect Macau to record up to 700,000 daily entries and exits at its border checkpoints during the mainland’s 5-day Labour Day Golden Week holiday.
Mainlanders’ May Day Golden Week holiday starts tomorrow.
Lei Tak Fai, who heads the Public Security Police Force’s (PSP) Public Relations Division, made the remarks during a press briefing at the Barrier Gate checkpoint where he and representatives from several other public entities briefed reporters about the local government’s ongoing preparations for tackling the expected surge in visitors during the Labour Day holiday period.
The entry and exit figures recorded by the Public Security Police, who run the city’s immigration service, comprise local residents, visitors, non-resident workers and non-local students enrolled in Macau.
Lei said that the police are now predicting that Macau will record a daily average of about 680,000 entries and exits at its border checkpoints between tomorrow and Sunday, with possible peaks on Thursday and Friday at 700,000 entries and exists.
Meanwhile, Liz Lam Tong Hou, who heads the Macau Government Tourism Office’s (MGTO) Public Relations Division, said during the briefing that MGTO officials expect the number of Labour Day holiday visitor arrivals to reach about 130,000 per day.
Lam also said that MGTO expected local hotels’ guestroom occupancy rate to reach 90 percent during the five-day period.
