A 40-year-old female domestic helper from Myanmar, surnamed Hnin, has been arrested for embezzling 10,000 patacas from a fellow Myanmar domestic helper, according to Public Security Police (PSP) spokesman Wong Wai Chon during a regular press conference yesterday.

In 2022, the victim entrusted Hnin with 6,000 patacas and HK$4,000 to send to the victim’s mother in Myanmar. However, the victim’s mother had not received the money by early 2023. When questioned, Hnin admitted to spending all the money but promised to send it to the victim’s mother later.

Hnin failed to keep her promise and only returned 1,000 patacas to the victim. On March 20 of this year, the victim encountered Hnin in Rua de D. Belchior Carneiro and attempted to confront her about the money, but Hnin fled the scene. The victim then sought help from her employer and reported the case to the police.

Hnin was arrested on Friday in Coloane. She confessed to the crime.

Hnin has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing an embezzlement charge, according to Wong.
