The Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (SMG) said in a statement on Friday that Macau broke the records of the “Monthly Mean Temperature” last month that had stood since 1952, as well as the “Monthly Mean Maximum Temperature” and the “Monthly Mean Minimum Temperature”.

According to the observatory, the “Monthly Mean Temperature” in April recorded at the Taipa Grande Meteorological Observation Station was 25.3 degrees Celsius, the highest in April since 1952.

Meanwhile, both the Monthly Mean Maximum Temperature and Monthly Mean Minimum Temperature for April broke their records as well, with the temperature at 28.0 degrees Celsius and 23.4 degrees Celsius respectively, the observatory said.

The weather station said that in March, Macau broke the record of “Highest Daily Temperature” on March 26, with the temperature at 31 degrees Celsius, while the second highest daily temperature in March was in 2008, with the temperature at 29.8 degrees Celsius.

The observatory issued its first Black Rainstorm Warning Signal this year, and the first in nearly three years, on Saturday morning. The rain was concentrated on the peninsula, with a maximum cumulative hourly rainfall of nearly 80 millimetres recorded in the northern district, and almost no rain in Taipa and Coloane.

According to SMG statistics, 38 rainstorm warning signals were issued for Macau last year, but only 12 of them affected all areas of the city, while 17 only affected the peninsula or Taipa or Coloane alone, the weather station pointed out.

The bureau also pointed out that although Macau is a small territory (33.3 sq km) , rainstorms are highly random and their distribution varies greatly, so it is still a great challenge to provide regular and quantitative rainstorm warnings.

The World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) said in its 2023 State of Global Climate Report that it confirms 2023 as the hottest year on record by a clear margin, adding that that with global warming, extreme weather was expected to continue to occur, and that that it possible for high temperature records to be broken again locally in the future.

This graphic provided by the Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (SMG) on Friday shows that Macau broke April’s “Monthly Mean Temperature”, “Monthly Mean Maximum Temperature” and the “Monthly Mean Minimum Temperature” which all dated back to 1952.
