The government began last night to resurface a thoroughfare and several nearby roads in Ilha Verde district in phases, with the work carried out at night only so that the roads are open to traffic in the daytime during the period.
The Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM) and the Transport Bureau (DSAT) jointly announced the resurfacing in a statement on Friday, according to which the resurfacing, which started last night, is scheduled to be completed before the morning of May 23.
The statement underlined that the resurfacing is needed as the road surfaces have worn out to “varying degrees”.
According to the statement, the 17-night resurfacing covers Avenida do Comendador Ho Yin, one of the district’s main thoroughfares, and the flyover running along a section of this avenue, as well as Rua Norte do Patane, Estrada do Canal dos Patos, and a section of Estrada Marginal da Ilha Verde near Estrada do Canal dos Patos.
The roads will be resurfaced with a new type of asphalt that can increase the durability of the road surfaces, therefore improving driving safety, and lowering road noise, the statement said.
According to the statement, the resurfacing is being carried out between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. every night during the period.
As the project is being carried out in a way that the original surface is scraped off sections of the roads after which the respective areas are then paved over with the new asphalt, the resurfacing of the respective sections can be completed in a night each time, because of which the roads can fully reopen during the day in the course of the project’s entire period, the statement said.
This technique of resurfacing roads was already adopted in several previous road-resurfacing projects, such as the one of resurfacing the entire Avenida do Coronel Mesquita in December last year.
