A man from the mainland who was barred from entering Macau has been caught after he had used a passport he claimed to have picked up on the street in the mainland so that he could enter Macau through the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge (HZMB) vehicular checkpoint, Public Security Police (PSP) spokesman Wong Chi Weng said in a regular press conference yesterday.

The suspect in his twenties surnamed Sou told the police that he’s jobless. Wong said that last month Sou was banned for three years from entering Macau as he was under investigation concerning a fraud case.

According to Wong, on Thursday at around 3 p.m., Sou attempted to enter Macau through the HZMB vehicular checkpoint. However, police officers at the checkpoint noticed that the photo in the passport Sou presented did not match his facial appearance. They then asked Sou to present his mainland ID card. Upon inspection, it was discovered that Sou has been banned from entering Macau.

Under questioning, Sou confessed to the crime and claimed that his intention was to come to Macau for gambling. He told the police that he had paid 100 yuan to a van driver at the checkpoint to take him to the vehicular checkpoint. However, when the local driver was later questioned by the police, he denied receiving any payment from Sou and said that he had been instructed by his company to drive Sou to the checkpoint.

Sou has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP) and faces a charge of using another person’s identity document, Wong said.
