A domestic helper from Indonesia pretending to be a customer stole a gold ring worth 4,000 patacas from a jewellery shop in San Kio district on Monday, according to a regular police press conference yesterday.

Public Security Police (PSP) spokesman Wong Chi Weng said during the press conference that PSP officers arrested the female non-resident worker (NRW) surnamed April just one day after the theft, at a flat in San Kio district, where the officers retrieved the stolen ring.

According to Wong, the jewellery shop’s owner reported on Monday a theft at the shop in San Kio district, saying that earlier that day a foreign woman entered the shop and said she wanted to buy a ring. The owner took a gold ring out of the display case and asked her to try it on. The woman then told the owner that she would only decide whether to buy it or not after her daughter replied to her message about it. “Appearing to wait for her daughter’s reply, the woman took advantage while the owner was attending to other customers and left the shop with the ring without paying for it,” Wong quoted the owner as saying.

The police forces’ citywide CCTV camera system and the shop’s CCTV footage identified the suspect in her fifties, who was arrested at noon on Tuesday in San Kio district, Wong noted.

Under questioning, the suspect admitted stealing the ring out of greed, Wong said, adding that the Public Security Police have transferred her to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), where she faces a theft charge.
