As today is World Hypertension Day, the Health Bureau (SSM) said in a statement yesterday that a special promotion urging people to check their blood pressure will be held today, inviting local enterprises, public entities, organisations and associations, as well as residents to join.

Participants may check their blood pressure today at home, at work, at medical facilities, at social service centres or at the bureau’s designated checkpoints, and a certificate of appreciation will be given to them electronically after reporting their results online, the statement said.

The statement said that the bureau hoped to raise public awareness of the issue of hypertension and the need for a more proactive management of one’s own health, especially among the younger age groups.

According to the statement, more than 97,000 people in Macau were known to suffer from hypertension in 2022, 2,500 more than in 2021, mostly males.

The statement noted that among the top 10 causes of death in Macau in 2022, hypertension tied for 2nd place, accounting for 11.1 percent, after malignant tumours.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), the theme of this year’s World Hypertension Day is “Measure Your Blood Pressure Accurately, Control It, Live Longer”, calling on members of the public to pay attention to the accuracy of their blood pressure measurements, and to control hypertension and its associated chronic diseases such as stroke, heart and kidney disease.
