A local woman in her fifties was arrested on Sunday for stealing HK$38,000 in cash, Public Security Police (PSP) spokesperson Lai In Hong said during a special press conference yesterday.

According to the spokesperson, the Public Security Police received a report from a mainland man last Friday who suspected that someone had stolen his HK$38,000 in cash, believing that he had left the cash in a taxi or a restaurant, adding that he had carried the cash in his pocket.

After scrutinising the police forces’ citywide CCTV camera system, PSP officers discovered that the victim had left his money on the cash desk of a restaurant when he was ordering food, the spokesperson said, adding that the local suspect surnamed Wong saw the cash and picked it up at once.

PSP officers intercepted Wong in Rua Oito do Bairro Iao Hon. She admitted to committing the crime and told the police that she had put the cash in the wardrobe at her home on the same day.

Wong handed back all the stolen cash to the police, the spokesperson said, adding that she faces a theft-by-finding charge.
