A worker died yesterday after accidentally falling from a height at the construction site of the sea-crossing Macau Bridge project off Pac On, the authorities said.

After the fourth Macau-Taipa bridge’s entire section was fully connected in March this year, constructors have been setting up the bridge’s various auxiliary facilities. The government aims to open Macau’s fourth sea-crossing bridge connecting the Macau peninsula and Taipa island in the next quarter.

According to statements from the Fire Services Bureau (CB), the Public Security Police (PSP) and the Judiciary Police (PJ), the case occurred at around 12 p.m. yesterday when the 55-year-old male non-resident worker from the mainland fell from a height at the bridge’s construction site at Pac On in Taipa.

According to the statements, firefighters and paramedics rushed to the scene where they determined that the worker was apparently dead after examination.

The PJ statement said that the Fire Services Bureau and the Public Security Police notified the Judiciary Police of the case at 12:33 p.m.

A joint statement by the Public Works Bureau (DSOP) and the Labour Affairs Bureau (DSAL) yesterday said that they are saddened by the fatal workplace accident.

According to the joint statement, the victim was removing temporary steel frames from a pier when he accidentally fell from there.

The joint statement said that the two bureaus have ordered the contractor to suspend all work to remove temporary structures or components from a height.

The Public Works Bureau has ordered the contractor to fully cooperate with the Labour Affairs Bureau’s investigation into the cause of the accident.

The statement said that DSOP officials have also ordered the contractor to submit an investigation report in due course.

The contractor will only be allowed to resume work on removing temporary structures or components from a height after the two bureaus confirm that it has improved safety measures in place, the statement underlined.
