A 71-year-old local man suffering various chronic diseases is in a critical condition after being infected with influenza, the Health Bureau (SSM) announced in a statement yesterday.
According to the statement, the man came down with a fever and shortness of breath on Saturday, after which he sought treatment at the public Conde de São Januário Hospital Centre where he was hospitalised.
The patient tested positive for the influenza A virus and a scan showed that he was suffering from double pneumonia, because of which he was diagnosed with influenza A complicated with pneumonia and respiratory failure, the statement said.
The man was put on a non-invasive positive pressure ventilator (NIPPV). However, the statement said, his symptoms worsened on Monday so that he was put on a ventilator, before he was transferred to the intensive care unit (ICU) on Tuesday.
Yesterday’s statement said that the patient was in a critical condition.
He had received a seasonal influenza jab. None of his family members living with him have felt unwell, the statement said.
The public hospital reported the case to the Health Bureau yesterday.
