A gambler from the mainland has been arrested for scamming a casino loan shark out of HK$100,000, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Ho Chan Nam said in a press conference yesterday.

The 31-year-old male suspect surnamed Li told the police that he’s a businessman.

According to Ho, Li and the male victim, a loan shark, on Wednesday agreed to each put up HK$100,000 for Li to gamble in a Cotai casino. Li promised to pay 20 percent of each separate bet as “interest” if he won. He also handed over his identity document to the victim to gain his trust.

Soon after the victim had given Li HK$100,000 worth of chips, Li left the casino with the chips, leading the victim to report the case to the police. Ho noted that the identity document given to the victim was fake.

The police intercepted the suspect when he re-entered Macau through the Barrier Gate checkpoint.

Li has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing fraud and document forgery charges.

Ho did not reveal the whereabouts of the HK$100,000.
