SSM to launch pilot programme on chronic disease prevention

Health Bureau (SSM) Director Alvis Lo Iek Long said during a recent meeting of the government-appointed Medical Affairs Committee that the bureau is planning to launch a pilot programme on chronic disease prevention in the local community in conjunction with private medical institutions, according to a statement by the bureau yesterday.

The Health Bureau’s Centre for Disease Control and Prevention official Wong Weng Man  was quoted by the statement as saying that the programme targets doctors working for private medical institutions participating in the government’s medical subsidy programme.

Eligible private doctors can provide government-recommended test packages to patients in their private clinics, and also offier advice to their patients on the screening of common chronic diseases, Wong added.

On the other hand, Dr Lo was quoted as saying that as of the end of last year 4,000 people had completed their organ donation registrations in person, although he acknowledged that there was a still a need to step up publicity to increase public awareness of organ donation.
