A local man has been arrested for stealing 140,000 patacas from his dead friend’s bank account, emptying it completely, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Ho Chan Nam said in a special press conference yesterday.

The 44-year-old suspect surnamed Chan works as a security guard.

According to Chan, a woman reported to the police last year that a total of 140,000 patacas had vanished from her dead husband’s bank account.

Under investigation, the police discovered that the money was transferred to Chan’s bank account on 15 occasions. They discovered that on the day the deceased passed away in 2020, Chan went to the widow’s home and demanded the deceased’s phone, as he had bought it for him.

Ho noted that the police suspected after Chan got the phone, he hacked his dead friend’s phone to gain access to the latter’s online bank account and gradually transferred the money to his bank account.

Chan was arrested when he attempted to leave Macau through the Barrier Gate checkpoint on Tuesday. He refused to cooperate with police.

Chan has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing computer fraud and theft charges.
