The two-day “Forum on Arts between the Two Sides of the Straits, Hong Kong and Macau”, organised by the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles, the Federation of Associations of Cultural Sectors of Macau, and the Macau Foundation (FM), held its inauguration ceremony yesterday morning at the Macau Science Centre in Nape.

According to a statement released by the organisers, the forum brings together art experts and scholars from mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau to discuss the aesthetics of Chinese civilisation and contemporary arts, as well as the innovation and dissemination of Chinese arts in the era of multimedia.

During the opening ceremony, Li Yi, the vice president of the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles, underlined that culture is the soul of a nation and a people. He noted that the nation’s rejuvenation is always supported by the prosperity of its culture, and he encouraged artists from both sides of the Strait, Hong Kong and Macau to strengthen their cultural confidence and work together to create a bright future for the nation.

Li also noted that Macau’s advantageous geographical location has led to a unique cultural landscape, where Chinese and Western cultures have met and merged over a long period of time, creating a fusion of diverse elements. This has made Macau an important stage for international cultural exchange and mutual learning, he said.

Representatives from Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Macau also commented on their perspectives on how to contribute to the heritage and dissemination of Chinese culture. Wu Zhiliang, the president of the public Macau Foundation, underlined that as China’s earliest and oldest city open to the outside world, Macau has not only preserved the traditional aspects of Chinese culture but has also served as a bridge for “Western culture to spread eastward” and “Chinese learning to spread westward”.

Wu expressed the hope that the forum will further highlight Macau’s role and provide valuable references and assistance in enhancing the nation’s ability to promote international communication.

Wu also noted that the forum aims to explore how to incorporate the distinct characteristics of Chinese civilisation into the aesthetic expression of contemporary arts, as well as to plan for the innovation and dissemination of Chinese arts in the era of multimedia.
