The Judiciary Police (PJ) received a report on Saturday from a Hong Kong woman about losing HK$2.1 million in an online gambling scam, in which a man claiming to work for a casino in Macau lured the victim into placing bets on a website by claiming he had found a loophole in a casino’s information technology (IT) network and computer system and that gambling on the website was a guaranteed win, PJ spokesman Chong Kam Leong said at a regular press conference yesterday.

Chong said: “She said that she met a man who claimed to be working as a senior staff member at a casino in Macau on a social media platform in June 2024. The man claimed that he was responsible for a casino’s [IT] network and computer system and had found a loophole that would allow her guaranteed wins when placing bets on the website.

She told police that according to what she saw on the website, she had won HK$1.1 million, but was unable to withdraw any money. Realising that the man had defrauded her, she went to the PJ headquarters all the way from Hong Kong to report the case.”

According to Chong, the victim transferred a total of HK$2.1 million on several occasions to several bank accounts to place her bets, but eventually lost contact with the man.
