Local lensman Rusty Fox (Wang Lap Wong) is showcasing his works in an exhibition titled “Nocturnal”, which is on at the Taipa Village Art Space until August 24 and showcases “body-like forms of plants” growing in Macau, according to a recent statement from the art space.
“Nocturnal” is also the title of Fox’s latest photobook.
The statement noted that the photographer, who has a master’s degree in documentary photography from the University of South Wales and a bachelor’s degree in photography at the University of East London, started the project during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown.
Fox then often snuck out at night and noticed that Macau’s plant life was thriving more than ever. “The vividness of the plant forms and growth – and their ‘body language’, which to him spoke louder than words – at a time when everything else was perfectly quiet and still inspired his project”, the statement said, the result of which can be seen at the exhibition.
Exhibitiongoers can find portraits of trees, with some tree trunks captured seeming to depict bodies, alongside “insect-like flowers” and plants “analogous to human forms”, the statement said. The photos were captured both through analogue and digital photography.
Exhibition curator and President of the Executive Board at Taipa Village Cultural Association João Ó was quoted by the statement as saying: “Fox’s nocturnal explorations of the local flora are a sensual and haptic interpretation of the anthropomorphic aspects of plants, inviting the audience to exercise their imagination to transcribe what they see.”
One can visit the free-admission art space daily from 12 noon to 8 p.m. during the period. For more details, visit https://www.taipavillagemacau.com/
