A statement released by the Macau Government Tourism Office (MGTO) yesterday said that it will seize the opportunities brought by a series of “favourable” measures implemented by the Central People’s Government for Macau to steer the special administrative region’s tourism development towards diversity and sustainability.

The government-appointed Tourism Development Committee (CDT) convened its first Plenary Meeting of 2024 on Monday introducing the government’s work plan for the second half of this year and an overview of Macau’s latest tourism situation. Secretary for Economy and Finance and Committee Chairperson Lei Wai Nong, who presided over the meeting, was quoted by the statement as saying that Macau’s visitor arrivals have continued to rise steadily.

The mainland opened 10 more cities for its Individual Visit Scheme (IVS) for travel to Hong Kong and Macau this year, comprising Harbin in Heilongjiang province, Hohhot in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, Lanzhou in Gansu province, Lhasa in the Xizang Autonomous Region, Taiyuan in Shanxi province; Urumqi in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, Xining in Qinghai province, and Yinchuan in the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, as well as Shaanxi’s provincial capital of Xi’an and Shandong’s port city of Qingdao.

In response to the new measure, MGTO is preparing to host its “Macao Week” roadshow in Xi’an next month, as well as launching online and offline publicity targeting the 10 cities to promote special travel offers destined for Macau and the city’s diverse offerings of “tourism +”, the statement said.

Moreover, the statement said that MGTO planned a variety of major events and activities for the latter half of the year, including the 32nd Macao International Fireworks Display Contest, World Tourism Day and Light-up Macao 2024, as well as the launching of tourism promotions for international visitors, and the handing out of over 250,000 gifts such as special offers on air tickets, cross-border transportation, hotel accommodation, dining, entertainment, and show tickets.
