Zhuhai’s Gongbei Customs said in a statement yesterday that a Macau driver was intercepted by its officers at the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge (HZMB) checkpoint on Friday and found to be attempting to smuggle nine mining motherboards to the mainland.

According to the WoolyPooly website, a mining motherboard is a specialised type of motherboard designed for cryptocurrency mining.

Upon inspection, the nine mining motherboards were seized from the hidden compartment in the rear door of the vehicle and the gap between the air conditioner bug screen at the front of the vehicle and the front bumper of the single-licence plated vehicle at a vehicle inspection channel of the HZMB checkpoint.

Local woman smuggles 115,000 euros in cash

Meanwhile Zhuhai’s Gongbei Customs announced in a separate statement yesterday that its officers have caught a Macau woman attempting to smuggle 115,000 euros (1.01 million patacas) in undeclared cash to the mainland through the Gongbei checkpoint on Friday, exceeding the official maximum amount of cash that a traveller is permitted to carry when entering the mainland.

According to the statement, customs officers at Gongbei border checkpoint intercepted a woman who had deliberately bypassed the X-ray machine for luggage inspection, after which the officers seized a plastic bag inside her handbag containing a quantity of euro banknotes, the statement said.

The statement noted that a traveller is only permitted to carry foreign currency equivalent to up to US$5,000 (40,280 patacas) when entering the mainland each time.

The statement also noted that all the money exceeding the maximum amount permitted has been returned to the woman.

The statement said that the woman was fined. However, it did not reveal the amount of the fine.
