The Public Security Police (PSP) busted on Thursday an illegal mahjong parlour in Areia Preta district, PSP spokeswoman Lai In Hon said at a regular press conference yesterday.
In the operation, according to Lai, the Public Security Police arrested the parlour’s female operator, surnamed Iu, who is in her thirties, as well as four gamblers comprising three locals and a mainlander. All of them told the police that they’re jobless.
According to Wong, the Public Security Police received last week a report about an illegal mahjong parlour in an industrial building on Avenida de Venceslau de Morais. PSP officers arriving at the scene took the quintet to a police station for questioning.
Under questioning, Iu admitted to having started her “business” in May, with a “rent” of 50 patacas per table per hour. She also told the police that she rented the place for 8,500 patacas per month.
The quintet have been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP) for further investigation. Iu faces a charge of running an illegal gambling business.
According to Macau’s gaming legislation, commercial mahjong businesses can only be run by the city’s six gaming concessionaires.
