A man from the mainland has been arrested for luring a mainland woman into investing 3 million yuan (3.3 million patacas at the current exchange rate) in a purported casino junket business, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Lou Chan Fai said in a special press conference yesterday.

The 35-year-old suspect, surnamed Wu, told the police that he’s jobless.

According to Lou, Wu and his accomplice in 2019 convinced the victim to invest in a Cotai junket business they claimed to be operating. They promised her a 24 percent annual return on her investment. To further gain her trust, they even took her to the casino to observe the supposed operations.

Despite not having clear information about the junket and not signing any formal documents, the victim believed the duo and transferred a total of three million yuan to them in multiple transactions. However, she never received the promised “dividends”.

On Saturday, the victim encountered Wu at a casino in Cotai, leading to a heated argument. The security personnel at the casino became aware of the quarrel and reported the case to the police. Wu was arrested at the scene.

Lou noted that the police are still investigating the whereabouts of Wu’s accomplice.

Wu was transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP) yesterday, facing a fraud charge, Lou noted.
