The Macau Government Information Bureau (GCS) said in a statement that Chief Executive Ho Iat Seng made a speech via video link for last night’s launch ceremony of an event where young people from Hong Kong and Macau are visiting Zhejiang Province, and Ho, according to the statement, said in his speech that the Macau government will continue to provide more opportunities and platforms to help young local people pursue their development.

According to local Chinese-language media reports yesterday, the launch ceremony was held in Jiaxing city in the province. Members of the delegation will visit various cities in the province during their trip lasting several days.

Ho’s Hong Kong counterpart John Lee Ka-chiu also made a speech via video link for the launch ceremony last night, the Hong Kong government said.

In his speech, according to the GCS statement, Ho noted that this year marks the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) and the 25th anniversary of Macau’s return to the motherland, making the trip particularly meaningful and significant.

According to the statement, Ho underlined that the trip is not only a precious opportunity for young local people and their Zhejiang counterparts to enhance mutual understanding and deepen their friendship, but also a vivid practice to deliver the patriotic spirit and promote national rejuvenation.

In his speech, Ho said that through on-site visits and exchanges, the activity enables young people from Hong Kong and Macau to gain a deeper understanding of the mainland’s socioeconomic development achievements and feel the motherland’s prosperity.

Ho said that the activity is also expected to showcase Zhejiang young people’s enthusiasm and friendliness, adding that the youths from the province and the two special administrative regions of Hong Kong and Macau are expected to learn from each other and share their respective growth and development experience and insights.

3 hopes for local youth

In his speech, Ho said that he raises three hopes for Macau young people.

First, Ho said, firmly stick to your aspirations and beliefs, promote the good tradition of loving the country and Macau, and make contributions to the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.

Second, Ho said, study hard with the aim of enhancing your abilities and constantly improve your all-round qualities and competitiveness, according to the statement.

Third, Ho said, put your learning into practice, gain a better understanding of civil society and national conditions, and realise your self-worth.

In his speech, Ho pledged that the local government will continue to adhere to its people-centred governance. By strengthening its guidance and support for local youngsters, Ho said, the government will help them shape the correct worldview, outlook on life, and values, stimulate their innovative spirit and creativity, and provide more opportunities and platforms for promoting their growth and development.

Ho’s speech was released while on leave, which ends on Monday.
