The Social Welfare Bureau (IAS) announced yesterday that its cooling shelter at the Ilha Verde Refuge Centre has extended its opening time to the public in response to the Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (SMG) issuing the Orange hot weather alert earlier in the day, until the mercury drops.
Since yesterday, the cooling shelter’s opening hours have been extended from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. due to the Orange hot weather alert, and if the temperature does not drop by 6 p.m., the shelter will remain open till 10 a.m. the next day, i.e., allowing users to stay overnight, according to the bureau.
The cooling shelter will open to the public from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. if a Yellow hot weather alert is issued.
According to the SMG website, the Orange alert means that it will be “extremely hot” in Macau.
Orange is the highest of Macau’s two-level hot weather warning system, Yellow being the lower alert.
The highest temperature is forecast to be over 36° Celsius today, according to the observatory which on its website urged the public to beware of heatstroke and to drink plenty of water.
Meanwhile, in order to take preventive measures against heat stroke and the effects of the hot weather, the bureau urged the public to pay close attention to the physical condition and situation of the elderly, the chronically ill, frail, and those living alone.
