The Health Bureau (SSM) announced in a statement last night that an 89-year-old local man inflicted with chronic diseases is in a critical condition after being infected with COVID-19.
According to the statement, the man, who lives in a senior care home, came down with a fever on Sunday when he was also coughing up phlegm. He tested positive for COVID-19 in a rapid antigen test (RAT), after which SSM health workers went to the care home to prescribe him COVID-19 antiviral medicines.
However, the statement said, the man began to develop shortness of breath on Wednesday, because of which he was then taken by ambulance to the public Conde de São Januário Hospital Centre where he was diagnosed with COVID-19 complicated with pneumonia and respiratory failure.
According to the statement, the patient was then put on a ventilator and transferred to the intensive care unit (ICU).
Last night’s statement said that the patient was in a critical condition. He had received two COVID-19 jabs.
The public hospital reported the case to the Health Bureau yesterday.
