Disco for most people is about catchy and kitschy music from the 70s and 80s, the glitter ball, flares and miniskirts, but for Er Gao, it’s a place where people found their identity and freedom when the disco phenomenon reached the mainland in 1985.
Originally a personal piece, Er Gao created the “Disco-teca” dance performance two years ago as a way to understand his parents and start a conversation with them.
“It’s hard to talk to them, it’s hard to express your love for them, as most of the Chinese community is like, it’s hard to break that wall. It got me thinking what they were like when they were young and that started off my research for ‘Disco-teca’,” Er Gao said.
