A statement released by the Public Security Police (PSP) late last night pointed out that Macau logged 717,000 arrivals and departures on Saturday, a single-day record, with 386,000 arrivals and departures made via the Barrier Gate checkpoint, accounting for 53.9 percent of the total, that border checkpoints highest figure in a single day after the COVID-19 pandemic.

The arrival-cum-departure figures comprise visitors, residents, non-local students studying in Macau and non-resident workers (popularly known as blue-card holders).

As of Saturday, the total of visitor arrivals for this year exceeded 20 million, two months ahead of last year, the statement said.

This year’s average daily visitor arrivals so far, which stands at 93,000, is 36.1 percent higher than in the same period last year and has already recovered to 82.9 percent of those in pre-pandemic 2019.

The COVID-19 pandemic severely affected Macau’s economy, its tourism, entertainment and retail sectors in particular, between early 2020 and late 2022.

The statement said the Public Security Police expect that the passenger flow at different checkpoints in Macau will remain high this month, adding that they will continue to work closely with the Macau Customs Service (SA), Zhuhai Customs and the Hong Kong Immigration Department to prepare crowd forecasts and early warnings for the peak period of traveller flows, and to open additional lanes in a timely manner.
