A five-day exhibition titled “Sunshine in the Mountains” kicked off yesterday afternoon at the Rui Cunha Foundation (FRC) gallery, showcasing the Chao Kuang Piu College (CKPC) Volunteer Teaching Team’s achievements over the past six years.

The exhibition is organised by the CKPC, which is one of the 10 residential colleges in the public University of Macau (UM), in conjunction with the FRC.

The volunteer teaching project has involved a team of university students teaching “isolated and disadvantaged children” in Guizhou Province, specifically at the Gantuan Mei’e Primary School in Congjiang County every winter and summer since December 2018, according to a statement provided by the gallery at yesterday’s opening ceremony.

Visitors to the exhibition, which ends on Saturday, will see 25 recent pictures of volunteers and schoolchildren, handicrafts, and letters written by the children to the volunteers, among others.

In his speech at yesterday’s opening ceremony, UM Professor and CKPC College Master Lau Yun-tung pointed out: “A salient feature of our college’s voluntary teaching programme is that it provides long term services to the same school in Guizhou. Many voluntary teaching team members have served for a long time and established a strong bond with children in Guizhou. I was fortunate to witness their continued personal growth along the way”.

Lau added that he believes that exhibitiongoers will be able to get a sense of the “whole-hearted feelings” between the children and the students after viewing the exhibition.

Meanwhile, this year also marks the college’s 10th anniversary, for which a cake-cutting event was also held yesterday to commemorate it. A 25-minute documentary that shares the same name as the exhibition was also screened, followed by a discussion, after the opening event.

Those interested in the exhibition can visit the free-admission gallery from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. until Friday, and from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday. More details can also be found on https://ruicunha.org/
