A female overstayer from the mainland has been arrested for scamming a non-local man in an illegal currency exchange deal by providing forged bank transfer receipts, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Ho Chan Nam said during a regular press conference yesterday.

The suspect is a 31-year-old female surnamed Huang.

According to Ho, the male victim and Huang struck a deal in a Cotai casino in late July, where the victim gave her on two occasions a total of HK$365,000, for Huang to transfer the corresponding amount in yuan to his online bank account.

After receiving money from the victim, Huang presented him with a bank transfer receipt on each occasion. Initially, the victim believed these receipts to be authentic. However, the victim’s bank later confirmed that he had not received the money, causing him to suspect that the receipts were fraudulent.

On Sunday, the victim arranged a meeting with the suspect at a Cotai casino to confront her. This encounter escalated into a heated argument, prompting casino security to report the case to the police.

Under questioning, Huang refused to cooperate.

Huang has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing a fraud charge, Ho said.
