A 66-year-old local man killed his 71-year-old wife with a cleaver in the early hours of yesterday after quarrelling with her over money in their flat near the Barrier Gate border checkpoint, the Public Security Police (PSP) said yesterday.
The man, surnamed Loi, called for an ambulance at 3:16 a.m. after attacking his wife, the Public Security Police said, adding that the victim was rushed to the public Conde de Sao Januario Hospital Centre where she was pronounced dead after emergency treatment.
In a statement yesterday, the Judiciary Police (PJ) identified the victim as a 71-year-old local surnamed Ieong.
The Judiciary Police classified the case as homicide, the statement said.
The man attacked his wife in their flat on the sixth floor of Hung Wan Kok Building in Istmo de Ferreira do Amaral, the Public
Security Police said, adding the investigating police officers assume that the couple had a row over money before the fatal attack.
A press conference about the case will be held today, according to a PJ message.
Police clarify suicide homicide tragedy
Meanwhile, concerning the case in which a man jumped to his death from a flat in the luxury One Oasis estate in Coloane on Sunday, the Judiciary Police said yesterday PJ officers now assume that the man had his two-year-old daughter in his arms when he jumped from the unit.
PJ spokesman Tam Weng Keong made the remarks during a regular press conference yesterday.
The clarification came after the Portuguese radio channel of government-owned broadcaster TDM quoted PJ spokeswoman Gloria Sun Weng Si as saying on Sunday that the man had thrown his daughter out of the window before leaping to his death.
While a separate PJ statement on Sunday said that the 34-year old Hong Kong man jumped to his death, it did not elaborate on how
his daughter died in the tragedy.
The Sunday statement said that the man was pronounced dead at the scene and that his daughter was rushed to the Conde de S. Januario Hospital Centre where she was pronounced dead after emergency treatment.
The man “suddenly” attacked his 30-year-old girlfriend – the girl’s mother – with a cleaver in the flat at 7 a.m. before jumping to his death, the Sunday statement said, adding that the woman’s condition was stable after emergency treatment in the public hospital.
The victim reportedly was still being treated in hospital yesterday.
The Sunday statement noted that the couple had recently been quarrelling over their relationship.
The couple and their daughter were Hong Kong citizens, according to the Sunday statement.
Tam said during yesterday’s regular press conference that the couple quarrelled over their relationship and money in the early hours of Sunday. Tam said the woman demanded an end to their relationship, after which the man attacked her.
Tam said that after scrutinising CCTV footage, PJ officers now assume that that the man had his daughter in his arms when he jumped.
