The University of Macau–Macao Union Hospital Joint Research Centre for Clinical Medicine was inaugurated on Friday, when a collaborative framework agreement signing and plaque unveiling ceremony were held.

The agreement was signed by UM Rector Yonghua Song (aka Song Yonghua) and Islands Healthcare Complex – Macao Medical Centre of Peking Union Medical College Hospital (Macao Union Hospital) Director Wu Wenming, in the presence of Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture Elsie Ao Ieong U and UM University Council Chair Peter Lam Kam Seng, a joint statement by the UM and the hospital noted.

They then officiated over a plaque-unveiling ceremony with Office of the Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture Chief Ho Ioc San and Macao Union Hospital Strategic Development Committee Vice President Lei Chin Ion.

“The joint research centre will actively promote innovative research in the fields of biomedicine, clinical medicine, critical diseases, Chinese medicine and ‘big health’, and train professionals in clinical medicine and other fields”, according to the joint statement.

In his speech, Song said that the signing and the centre’s establishment were of great significance and would effectively promote innovation and progress in basic research and clinical technology.

Moreover, Wu said in his speech that with the centre’s establishment and the local government’s support, the two parties would leverage their respective research strengths and resources to jointly improve the quality of medical education in Macau, train more outstanding medical professionals for Macau, facilitate the sustainable development of clinical research and innovative healthcare in the Greater Bay Area (GBA), and improve the city’s healthcare quality.

The statement added that all guests then visited the Macao Centre for Testing of Chinese Medicine (MCTCM) on the UM campus in Hengqin. MCTCM Director Li Shaoping said that both centres would complement each other’s strengths to intensify efforts in medicine testing, ensure the quality of clinical medication, and conduct in vivo drug testing, thus providing technical support for precision medicine and personalised medication in the future.

The ceremony was attended by government officials as well as UM and hospital representatives.
