A 30-year-old local woman was cheated out of 420,000 patacas on WeChat by a user claiming to be an investment consultant who convinced her to open an investment account, a Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesperson said during regular press briefing at the PJ headquarters yesterday.

According to the spokesperson, the victim became digitally acquainted with the suspect, who claimed to be from Taiwan and worked for the well-known Jih Sun Securities Investment Consulting Company, via WeChat in October last year.

The spokesperson said the victim, who works in a hotel, had been chatting regularly with the suspect when, at the end of November, he told her about his company’s highly profitable investment plan.

The suspect told her that employees were not allowed to take part in the plan and asked her to give him her personal information so that he could join the plan in her name and he would give her a percentage of the profit in return, said the spokesperson.

According to the spokesperson, the victim agreed. After a week, she received a call from a man who claimed to be a Jih Sun staff member. He told the victim the plan had made a profit and asked for identity verification.
