Praises outgoing CE Ho Iat Seng for ‘constructive projects’

National Committee of the Chinese People’s Consultative Conference (CPPCC) Vice Chairman Edmund Ho Hau Wah, Macau’s first and second term chief executive in 1999-2009, threw his “sincere support” for Sam Hou Fai’s candidacy for the sixth-term chief executive.

Sam Hou Fai’s election campaign office released a statement yesterday afternoon with the headline “Edmund Ho supports Sam Hou Fai’s candidature for the sixth-term chief executive”, noting that Ho “fully agreed” with Sam Hou Fai’s philosophy of administration of “forging ahead together by upholding fundamental principles and breaking new ground” and that he believed that Sam would be able to unite all sectors of the Macau community, take on board public opinion, and gather strength to lead Macau to further glory.

The statement quoted Ho as saying that Sam’s decision to run in the chief executive election “highly” demonstrates his “commitment to the era” and his “deep affection and sense of responsibility” towards Macau, adding that “having worked with Sam Hou Fai for quite a number of years, [it is clear that] Sam is a person of integrity and selflessness, who is both principled and practical”.

Noting that Sam had been devoted to his duties, impartial and strict and had made significant contributions to the building of the judicial system and the rule of law of the Macau Special Administration Region (MSAR) as the president of the Court of Final Appeal (TUI) since Macau’s return to the motherland on December 20, 1999, the statement quoted Ho’s as saying, Sam’s candidature is in line with the principles of “One Country, Two Systems”, “the people of Macao governing Macau” and “a high degree of autonomy”, “fully” embodying the “patriots governing Macau” principle.

Meanwhile, Ho also pointed out that as the fifth-term Chief Executive, Ho Iat Seng had led the SAR government with constructive projects to overcome various difficulties and challenges, which has been “highly” appreciated and “fully” recognised by the central authorities, adding that “I believe we all understand and respective” Ho Iat Seng’s decision not to run in the sixth-term chief executive election due to health concerns.
