Twenty students from the Macao Polytechnic University (MPU) were chosen as the first batch of “Fraud Prevention Ambassadors” yesterday in the “On-campus Anti-scam ‘Vaccination’ Programme” launched by the Judiciary Police (PJ) and the local education sector, according to a PJ statement yesterday.

The programme’s ceremony was held on the MPU campus yesterday, jointly officiated by MPU Vice-Rector Lei Ngan Lin, and PJ Deputy Director Sou Sio Keong. The event was witnessed by guests, teachers and students, the statement said.

During yesterday’s ceremony, 20 MPU students took their oath, pledging to take up the responsibility of “Fraud Prevention Ambassadors” to promote fraud prevention on campus with rational thinking and a positive attitude, and to work together with their teachers and classmates to help build a safer campus network, the statement said.

The programme, with the aim of enhancing university and college students’ awareness of the risk of falling victim to online scams, is presenting a “Crime Prevention Week” held by MPU until Friday with anti-deception publicity booths set up on campus and PJ officers to go into classrooms introducing the latest modus operandi of telecommunication network frauds and ways to prevent such frauds, the statement said.

Through interactive exchanges in the series activities, the programme aims to enhance students’ understanding of online fraud cases, as well as their awareness of fraud prevention and their ability to identify fraud cases, the statement said.

The Judiciary Police will continue to study and adjust various  prevention strategies in response to the trend of telecommunication network fraud crimes, and maintain close contact and cooperation with the education sector, so as to enhance students’ anti-fraud awareness, the statement pointed out.
